HearthHold beginner’s guide: your first session
Start HearthHold with a practical first-session plan: follow quests, develop resources, check storage and learn your town before sending an army.

The quick answer
Start HearthHold by following your active quests, inspecting your resource income and choosing upgrades that remove your next bottleneck. Learn the town, countryside and world views before committing troops. Before leaving, check storage capacity, grain and the timers you have started.
First, understand the three views
Your town is where buildings turn resources into new possibilities. The countryside shows the fields supporting that development. The world map shows the wider setting for exploration, neighbours and journeys. Switch between them early so that you know where a decision belongs.
Read your town's current production and the requirements shown for an upgrade. A greyed-out action usually points to something specific: resources, a prerequisite, available capacity or another condition. Solving that condition is more useful than choosing a different upgrade at random.
Use quests as your opening route
Open the Quest panel and work from the objectives currently available to you. Five main quests stay open at once, and you can complete and claim them in any order. The tutorial is optional and can be skipped. Quests give your first decisions a purpose and help introduce systems in context. Check back after completing an objective so that you can claim an available reward and see what comes next.
Do not treat any written build order as more authoritative than the live game. Your tribe, current resources and existing progress can change what is sensible. A guide should help you make a choice, not persuade you to ignore the requirement in front of you.
- Choose one active objective.
- Inspect its missing requirement.
- Start the upgrade or action that satisfies it.
- Use the waiting time to inspect your economy and next objective.
Build an economy that supports the next step
Wood, stone, iron and grain all matter. If an important upgrade is waiting for one resource, inspect the matching field production before expanding everything else. Keep storage large enough for the upgrade you want to afford.
For example, if stone repeatedly delays your next building, another troop order may deepen the problem. Improving stone income or arranging a suitable trade can address it directly. Read the resource economy guide for the distinction between income, capacity and spending.
Recruiting more troops is a commitment to supporting them. Review grain and upkeep in the live interface before adding a large training order. An army should serve a plan, not simply consume everything you produce.
End the session with a return plan
Before leaving, check construction, research and training timers. Look at resource capacity and any messages or reports that need attention. Note one next action for your return, such as collecting a quest reward or starting an upgrade once its prerequisite finishes.
Explore the map before you attack another player. Learn what the march type does, where the troops will go and how long the journey takes. Joining a helpful alliance can make those first decisions easier; clear questions get better answers than an unexplained request for help.
The aim of your first session is a town you understand. A coherent plan beats unlocking several systems without knowing how they connect.
Common questions
What should a new HearthHold player upgrade first?
Follow the requirements of your active quests and fix the resource or building bottleneck blocking your next objective. There is no single build order that fits every current town.
Should I attack other players immediately?
Learn march types, scouting, defense and travel times first. Inspect the live protection rules and target information before committing troops.
