HearthHold building guide: what to upgrade next

Plan a HearthHold town around useful unlocks, resource capacity, research and army needs. Learn a repeatable way to choose your next building upgrade.

Fully upgraded Roman town with fields, walls and buildings surrounding the Keep.
Actual in-game capture of a fully upgraded development town. Your town grows through play.

The quick answer

Choose your next HearthHold building by the job it needs to do: unlock a system, remove a resource bottleneck, support your army or improve defense. Read the live prerequisite and cost before starting. An upgrade is valuable when it advances a plan you can explain.

Give every building a job

The Keep opens building plots and caps the levels of other buildings and resource fields. Building and field upgrades share one construction lane, with up to five jobs in the queue. Filling the queue does not mean five upgrades run at once. A developed town contains several connected systems. Resource fields supply it; storage holds what those fields produce. Buildings open options for research, troops, heroes, trade and cooperation. Defenses help protect the investment.

Questions to ask before committing resources
Your objectiveWhat to inspect
Afford a larger projectProduction and storage capacity
Access a new optionThe option's building and research requirements
Grow an armyTraining access, resources and grain support
Strengthen a townDefense, troop readiness and supporting infrastructure

The names of impressive buildings do not tell you which investment solves your immediate problem. Start with the job, then choose the building.

Work backward from the unlock you want

Suppose you want an option that is currently unavailable. Inspect its requirements, then identify the first missing prerequisite. That may lead to an earlier building upgrade, research or simply the resources to pay for it.

Work backward until you reach an action you can take now. This produces a useful sequence without pretending that every player should follow the same opening. Your existing buildings, tribe and quests determine the route.

Keep a short list. One main objective and a supporting economy task are easier to manage than a long queue of unrelated ambitions. Recheck requirements when beta updates change the game.

Do not separate buildings from their support costs

A military unlock is only useful if you can afford and support the units it enables. A larger storage building is most useful when capacity is actually limiting you. Research needs a purpose as well as a timer.

Before an expensive upgrade, ask what you will do immediately after it finishes. If you cannot answer, consider whether a cheaper supporting upgrade should come first. The economy guide explains how income and capacity can block an otherwise sensible plan.

Use a fully upgraded town as a reference

The four tribe town captures show real development fixtures at maximum building levels. They are useful visual references for the architecture and scale you can work toward. A new account starts its own progression rather than receiving that finished town.

Do not reproduce a screenshot as a compulsory build order. A picture shows an endpoint, not the decisions, prerequisites and resource needs along the way. Your town should serve the way you actually play.

As more systems open, review your priorities again. A town supporting research has different immediate spending needs from a town preparing an army. Both still depend on a stable economy and a clear reason for the next upgrade.

Common questions

Should I upgrade every building evenly?

Not automatically. Prioritise the prerequisites and bottlenecks of your current objective, while maintaining the economy and support it needs.

Are the maximum-level towns on the website real gameplay screenshots?

Yes. They are captures from fully upgraded development towns rendered in the game, not images of new-player starting towns.
